Welcome to Duel Links: A Beginner's Guide

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links is a fast-paced, mobile-friendly version of the classic card game that strips the game down to its most exciting core mechanics. If you're just starting out, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from the basics of gameplay to building your first competitive deck.

Understanding the Duel Links Format

Duel Links differs from the main Yu-Gi-Oh! card game in several key ways:

  • 4,000 LP starting points (instead of 8,000 in the TCG).
  • 3 Monster Zones and 3 Spell/Trap Zones per player (instead of 5).
  • 20-card decks (the minimum is 20, maximum is 30).
  • Skills: Unique passive or active abilities tied to your chosen Duelist character — these can dramatically change a deck's strategy.

Because of the smaller field and lower LP, games are faster and more decisive. A single strong play can end a duel in Duel Links much more quickly than in the TCG.

First Steps: What to Do When You Start

  1. Complete the tutorial — It gives you free cards and introduces the basic mechanics.
  2. Unlock more Duelists at the Gate — Duel against standard NPCs in Story Mode to level up characters and unlock their starting decks and cards.
  3. Claim all login bonuses and missions — These give free gems early on.
  4. Don't spend gems immediately — Save them for a meta-relevant box or deck before spending on packs.
  5. Level up characters — Each character levels up and rewards you with free cards, gems, and skills.

How to Earn Gems (Without Spending Money)

Gems are the premium currency used to buy card packs. Here are the best free sources:

  • Missions & Achievements: Complete daily and stage missions for consistent gem income.
  • Character Level-Ups: Every character rewards gems at various levels.
  • PvP Ranked Rewards: Reaching higher ranks at the end of a season grants significant gem payouts.
  • Events: Limited-time events often give 200–800+ gems across their run.
  • Stage Missions: Story-mode stages unlock gems as milestone rewards.

Building Your First Deck

For beginners, we recommend focusing on one of these beginner-friendly archetypes:

Tip: Before spending gems on a box, check if the deck's key cards can be farmed from Legendary Duelists at the Gate. Farming is always the most gem-efficient path.

Key Game Mechanics to Understand

Skills

Skills are special abilities unique to each Duelist character. They range from adding specific cards to your hand at the start of a duel to passive stat boosts. Unlocking the right skill can completely change how a deck functions, so prioritize farming skills for your chosen character.

The Battle Phase

In Duel Links, the Battle Phase is where most games are decided. Because there are only 3 Monster Zones, managing board presence is critical — a full board of 3 monsters is much more significant here than in the TCG.

Graveyard Effects

Many powerful effects in Duel Links activate from the graveyard. Learning to manage your graveyard — knowing what to send there and when — is one of the biggest skill bumps a beginner can make.

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spending gems on old or non-meta boxes — always research before buying.
  • Ignoring the graveyard — it's essentially a second resource pool.
  • Playing too many monsters — 20-card decks need tight ratios; too many monsters brick your hand.
  • Skipping events — events give exclusive cards and gems you can't get elsewhere.

You're Ready to Duel!

Duel Links has a steep learning curve at first, but once you understand the format and get a feel for a deck you enjoy, it becomes incredibly rewarding. Focus on one deck, learn it thoroughly, and have fun climbing the ranks!
